GVM upgrades
Most touring 4WDs and loaded utes are closer to their weight limit than their owners think. We supply and fit GVM upgrades from Touring Solutions Australia and America's Garage, with the load rated wheels and tyres to match.

The numbers that matter
Every vehicle has legal weight limits on its compliance plate. Touring gear adds up faster than most people think, and it's easy to be over without knowing it.
Gross Vehicle Mass
The most the vehicle can legally weigh, fully loaded. That includes you, passengers, fuel, water, accessories and the towball weight of a van.
What you can add
GVM minus what the vehicle weighs empty. A bar, canopy, drawers and a fridge can use up most of a factory payload before anyone gets in.
Front and rear axle limits
Each axle has its own limit. You can be under your GVM and still over on the rear axle, which is common with a canopy, water tank or heavy towball. Most packages raise the rear axle rating.
Gross Combination Mass
The most the vehicle and trailer can weigh together. If you're towing heavy, this is often the limit you hit first.
Braked towing capacity
The heaviest braked trailer you can tow. Depending on the upgrade and when it's done, this can change, so we check it with you.
Before or after rego?
When the upgrade is done makes a real difference, so it's worth knowing before you buy.
Pre-rego
Done before the vehicle is first registered. The kit is federally approved under Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM), so the new rating is part of the vehicle from day one. Most packages keep the full factory towing capacity.
Post-rego
Done on a vehicle that's already registered, and certified as a modification. Still a good option for most people, but towing capacity can be lower, especially when the vehicle is loaded to the new GVM. Each package shows both figures.
Most upgrades need load-rated wheels and tyres
A higher GVM means each wheel and tyre carries more. Many kits need a higher load rating than factory, and we supply and fit them on the same job.
Wheels
Load-rated alloys that suit the new rating and still look the part.
Tyres
LT construction tyres with the load index to match, from budget to premium.
Suspension and towing
New shock absorbers, springs and airbags all combine to increase the load carrying ability of the vehicle.
How a GVM upgrade works with us
One workshop handles the whole job: the kit, the wheels and tyres it needs, the fit and the paperwork.
-
1
Plan the build
We look at how you load and use the vehicle: people, fuel, water, drawers, canopy, roof gear and towball weight. If you're not sure where you sit, pop in or give us a call and we'll walk you through it.
-
2
Pick the package
We match the kit to the job and quote the load-rated wheels and tyres it needs at the same time, so there are no surprises.
-
3
Fit and certify
Fitted in our Brendale workshop with the supplier's engineering. Most fits take 2 to 3 days. Chassis extensions take longer.
-
4
Drive away sorted
You leave with the certification paperwork and an alignment set for the new ride height and load.
GVM questions we get asked
Do I actually need a GVM upgrade?
If your vehicle is close to or over its GVM when it's loaded for a trip, yes. That's people, fuel, water, accessories and the towball weight of anything you tow. The only way to know for sure is to weigh it, and we can help with that.
What happens if I'm over my GVM?
You're driving an overloaded vehicle. That can mean fines, and it can give your insurer grounds to reject a claim. It's also harder on other components in the vehicle.
Is a GVM upgrade legal in Queensland?
Yes, when it's done with an approved kit and the certification is completed. Every package we fit comes with the supplier's federal SSM engineering and paperwork, unless it's in the NB2 category.
Will it change my towing capacity?
It depends on the vehicle and whether the upgrade is done before or after rego. Many packages keep full braked towing when done pre-rego. Each vehicle page shows both figures.
Do I need new wheels and tyres?
Often, yes. Many packages need wheels and tyres with a higher load rating than factory. We'll check what you have and quote load-rated options on the same job if you need them.
Will it affect my insurance or warranty?
Let your insurer know about the upgrade and keep the paperwork with the vehicle. If the vehicle is under new car warranty, ask us and we'll talk you through it.
How long does it take?
Most fits take 2 to 3 days in the workshop depending on if it's pre-rego or post rego. Bigger builds, like chassis extensions, take longer. We'll give you a time frame when we quote.
