A tray, canopy, water, fuel and camp gear add up quickly on a 79. A GVM upgrade gives you the legal headroom to carry it, with suspension built for the weight.

Good to know before you book
Wheels and tyres need to match
Stages 1 and 2 need wheels and tyres rated to at least 1,320 kg each. Stage 3 need 1,500 kg. Maximum tyre size is 295/75R16.
We'll check what you're running now and quote load-rated options if you need them.
Which stage do most people pick?
For a touring 79 with a tray, canopy and a fridge, Stage 2 is the sweet spot. If you're towing a heavy van or carrying a lot of weight over the rear, Stage 3 is worth it for the stronger diff and rear axle.
Buying new? Talk to us before the vehicle is registered. A pre-rego upgrade usually keeps more of your towing capacity than doing it later.
How a GVM upgrade works with us
One workshop handles the whole job: the kit, the wheels and tyres it needs, the fit and the paperwork.
1
Plan the build
We look at how you load and use the vehicle: people, fuel, water, drawers, canopy, roof gear and towball weight. If you're not sure where you sit, pop in or give us a call and we'll walk you through it.
2
Pick the package
We match the kit to the job and quote the load-rated wheels and tyres it needs at the same time, so there are no surprises.
3
Fit and certify
Fitted in our Brendale workshop with the supplier's engineering. Most fits take 2 to 3 days. Chassis extensions take longer.
4
Drive away sorted
You leave with the certification paperwork and an alignment set for the new ride height and load.
Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series GVM upgrade FAQs
Which stage do I need?
It comes down to how much weight sits over the rear and whether you tow. Stages 1 and 2 suit most touring setups. Stages 3 and 4 are for heavy rear loads, big vans or longer trays. Tell us what's on the vehicle and we'll point you to the right one.
Will my towing capacity change?
Done before rego, the packages keep 3,500 kg braked towing. Done after rego, braked towing is 2,800 kg when the vehicle is loaded to the full 4,200 kg GVM.
Can I keep my current wheels and tyres?
Only if they carry the load rating the package needs: 1,320 kg each for Stages 1 and 2, or 1,500 kg for Stages 3 and 4. Plenty of aftermarket wheels don't. We'll check yours before we quote.
How long will the vehicle be off the road?
Most fits take 2 to 3 days. Stage 4 takes longer because of the chassis extension. We'll give you a time frame when we quote.
